Belonging- Baptism/Confirmation

During this topic, we will be thinking about how we are welcomed into new situations and groups throughout our lives. We will come to recognise the importance of welcome, of feeling comfortable and happy in new situations and feeling a sense of belonging in new groups. We belong to families, to work places and to social groups. The following are some key questions we will explore:

Q. How do we show people that they are welcome?

Q. How is a baby welcomed into a family?

Q. How are we welcomed into God’s family?

Domestic Church – Myself

We will begin our journey with RE by focusing on our Domestic Church topic of families. Our topic is called – Myself.

We will explore and come to an understanding of who we are and to appreciate our values, through discussions surrounding family and the importance of our uniqueness. We will come to understand that God creates each one of us in love, in his own image and likeness.

Q. What does the word ‘family’ mean to you?

Q. What people do you associate with ‘family’?

Q. What joys and sorrows do you remember of family life?

Other faiths- Judaism

In our other faiths topic, we will be exploring the big question ‘What is Hanukkah?’ During this topic, we will listen to and discuss the story of Hanukkah, thinking about why the festival is important to Jewish people and how they might celebrate. We will also link this to the children’s own experiences, talking about the special times they have experienced (e.g. Christmas, Easter, Birthdays) and the different ways in which these events were celebrated.

Advent- Birthdays

In our Advent topic, we will be exploring the big question ‘Why do we celebrate birthdays?’ We will learn that Christians at Christmas celebrate the gift of Jesus, given by God as a sign and expression of God’s love.  We will learn that giving and receiving reflects the truth that all life is given by God and life is given meaning through the gift of Jesus. The following are some questions we will explore:

  •  Which of the gifts you have received do you treasure most?
  • Why do you treasure them?
  • When have you experienced someone giving of themselves to you?
  • Reflect on times in your life when you give of yourself to others.  How does this feel?
  • Reflect on times in your life when you give of yourself to others.  How does this feel?

Topic 4- Celebrating

In this topic, we will discover how being a member of the community is an essential and enjoyable part of life for people of every age and faith. We will think about memories of celebrations and different celebrations within the Catholic Church. We will also consider unexpected surprises, when people may want to celebrate with family, friends and communities.

Q. Think back to your childhood. Which celebrations of community life did you most enjoy?

How did you celebrate? Who took part?

Q. Which celebration are you looking forward to in the coming months?

How will you celebrate? Who else will take part?

Topic 5- Gathering

In this topic, we will discuss how the parish family finds strength in gathering for the celebration of the Eucharist, a sign of God’s love in our life. We will think about how being thoughtful for life, for people and gifts, is a vital part of our relationships with one another.

Q. Recall a time when you were thanked.  How was the gratitude expressed?  How did you feel?

Q. How are relationships deepened in everyday life?

Topic 6- Growing

In this topic, we will think about how when children are young, parents have to do everything for them and sacrifice their own needs for those of their children.  The quality of the parents’ loving care lays the foundation for their children to grow into people capable of giving love to others. When parents are older, their children may come to look after them.  This topic aims to help children recognise how life is a cycle of being cared for and caring for others and of receiving and giving.

Q. Recall a time when you had to give up your own needs in order to help someone else.

Q. What were the costs?

Q. What were the rewards of the giving?

Topic 7- Good News

In this topic, we will be learning about the celebration of Pentecost. First, we will explore what good news is and come to understand that everyone has Good News they can share. We will also discuss how receiving good news makes us feel and how we feel when we share good news with others. We will then learn about Pentecost: the celebration of the Good News of Jesus.

We will think about questions such as:

What is Good News?
Who is the Holy Spirit?

Topic 8- Reconciliation

In this topic, we will learn that Christians believe that, in Jesus Christ, the world has been reconciled to God. Children will come to  understand that through Christ we are offered the power to forgive and make peace.  We will also learn that relationships bring both joy and challenge.

We will think about questions such as:

Who are your friends?
Why are they your friends?
Are you anyone’s friend?
