Lent 1- Starry Night

This half term, our topic Starry Night Winter Wonderland will inspire awe and curiosity as we explore the mysteries of night-time, the wonders of winter, and the people and animals connected to these themes. Children will learn that while they sleep, many important jobs are carried out, including those of emergency service workers such as police officers, firefighters, and paramedics.
We’ll also investigate the magical night sky by learning about the Moon, astronauts like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and how people travel into space. Our geography focus includes exploring where it is always cold, comparing Arctic regions with our own environment and discussing animals that live in cold climates, including their unique adaptations. In science, we will delve into the natural world by discovering nocturnal animals and their special features, exploring materials and textures in the winter landscape, and investigating light sources to understand why it gets dark at night.
Children will also learn how weather changes through the seasons and how to care for birds and wildlife in winter by making bird food and observing seasonal changes. Creative learning will be encouraged through icy art, building rockets, painting planets and stars, and mixing colours to create night-time scenes.
We will sing lullabies and listen to classical music, expressing our feelings through movement and discussion. Communication and language will be developed through storytelling, asking questions, and sharing our own experiences of bedtime, dreams, and night-time routines.
Personal, social, and emotional development will be supported through stories like Owl Babies and activities that promote caring for others, understanding routines, and building friendships. Children will also practise physical skills through themed movement, ball games, and fine motor activities like drawing stars and building simple models. This engaging theme provides a rich, cross-curricular learning experience rooted in awe, discovery, and imagination.
