1. Advent Term 1 2023

Geography: One Planet, Our World

We begin our first Advent term with a geography based topic called ‘One Planet, Our World’.  In the One Planet, Our World project, we will use maps to locate countries and read four-figure grid references.  We will sort and classify human and physical features, and begin to use the eight points of a compass to locate geographical features on a map.  We will also be learning about the layers of Earth and studying plate tectonics, the five major climate zones on Earth and begin to use longitude and latitude to locate places on a world map.

Science: Animal Nutrition

We begin our science topic by revisiting prior learning about living things, including how animals can be carnivores, herbivores or omnivores, needing food, water, air, shelter, sleep and space to reproduce and survive.  We understand that ‘nutrition’ is a life process by which all living things get or make food.  We will learn that humans are omnivores because of their teeth and ask scientific questions about the human diet and research to find the answers.  Humans need a balanced diet containing various foods in the right proportions from the main food groups: fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, proteins, dairy and alternatives and oils and spreads.  We investigate the fattiness of various foods by comparing the amount of fat in some foods, and to complete our topic we explore and compare the diets of carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, linked to the seasons.
