In this topic, we will discuss how our families show us love and care, including some of the ways they give us a happy home. We will hear some psalms and consider ways that we can show God’s love to others. We will also recognise how Jesus’ family loved and cared for him.

Belonging

In this topic we will begin by discussing the groups that we belong to. We will learn about the rite of Baptism; what happens at a Baptism and the significance of some of the signs and symbols of Baptism. We will also discuss how we belong to Jesus’ family and design our own Baptismal candles.

Judaism

In this topic we will learn about the religion of Judaism. We will hear the story of the family of Abraham. We will learn about how Moses led the Jewish people to freedom and how God helped Moses to do this.

Waiting

In this topic we will explore the importance of the season of Advent. We will discuss times in our lives when it is necessary to wait and explore ways that we can show love to others during Advent. We will create our own Advent wreaths and name some of the parts. We will also hear the stories of the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity and Christingle and begin to retell parts of these.

Special People

In this topic, we will learn about how families who live or worship in a parish are part of the parish family.  As in any family there are people who have special roles within the parish.  On Sunday, in church, we meet people who do special jobs as we gather to celebrate the Good News of Jesus.  We will think about special people in our lives who are there to help us.

Meals

We will learn about how the parish family gathers for the Eucharist (Mass), Jesus’ special meal.  We will talk about how we find strength in gathering for the celebration of the Eucharist and of God’s love in our lives. We will learn about the story of the Last Supper.

Change

We will learn about the season of Lent and begin to understand that Lent offers a time to reflect on life and change. This is a time to prepare for Easter.  Change is a necessary part of healthy growth. We will look at some of the special days in Lent (such as Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday) in more detail too.

Holidays and Holydays

We will learn about the season of Pentecost and be able to recognise what a holy day is. We will read the story of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and begin to retell it. We will also learn how the Holy Spirit is a helper and a guide and the associated symbols which represent the Holy Spirit.

We will learn about the religion of Hinduism. We will discover more about the elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh and the significance of the lotus blossom.

Neighbours

Within this topic, we will learn about what a neighbour is. We will describe ways that we can be good neighbours to others and will retell the story of the Good Samaritan. We will also talk about ways that we can be a good global neighbour and begin to describe some of the things that we can do.

Being Sorry

In this topic we will hear the stories of Levi and Zacchaeus and in our retelling of these, we will discuss how they proved that they were sorry. We will talk about times when we need to say sorry and discuss the importance of forgiveness. We will also recognise and describe ways in which God helps us to be kind.
