The Victorians – Y6

The expectations are that KS2 complete 5 hours of learning daily and KS1 complete 3 hours daily

Weekly Maths Tasks

Weekly Reading Tasks (Complete 1 per day)

Essential - Complete these everyday

  • Complete daily Arithmetic problems, located under ‘Remote Learning’ on the school website.
  • Complete the Maths resources located under ‘Remote Learning’ on the school website.

Additional:

  • Play on Hit the Button - Focus on times tables, division facts and squared numbers.
  • Practice writing out your times tables on a piece of paper – rehearse them afterwards.  
  • Working on Times Table Rockstars. If your child works on Numbots in school they can access this with the same login – this log on is located inside the front cover of your Remote Learning book.
  • Log onto Education City and complete tasks set by your teacher – you will also find this log on inside the front cover of your Remote Learning book.
  • Read a chapter from your home reading book or a book that you have borrowed from the library.
  • Following this, summarise the events from the chapter. You could bullet point what happened, create a comic strip or present the information in your own creative way.
  • Whilst you are doing this, note down any unfamiliar words from the chapter that you have read. Explore the meanings of these words by using a dictionary, reading around the sentence or using print conventions.
  • Read something around the house that isn’t a book- you can then complete your reading diary following this.
  • Write a book review about the book/books you have read.
  • Write a new and exciting blurb for your book.
  • Once you have read your book, take a quiz on Accelerated Reader!

Weekly Spelling Tasks (Complete 1 per day)

Weekly Writing Tasks (Complete 1 per day)

  • Practise the Year 5/ 6 Common Exception Words – See list stuck inside of your Remote Learning book.
  • Choose 5 Common Exception words. Write a synonym, antonym, the meaning and an example of how to use the word in a sentence.
  • Proofread your writing from the day. You can use a dictionary to check the spelling of any words that you found challenging. This will also you to check that the meaning of the word is suitable for the sentence.
  • How many words can you find with the suffix ‘ed’ ‘er’ and ‘ing’
  • Choose 5 of the Year 5/6 words. Create an acronym for each of these words​​​​​​​ - because – big elephants can always understand small elephants
  • Look at images of Victorian inventions. Check the invention dates and order these on a timeline. Write about why these inventions were so important and write a short biography about each inventor -E.g Thomas Edison – Light Bulb) You have 2 DAYS to complete this task.

 

  • Find out what the term ‘Industrial Revolution’ means. Find out why the introduction of steam power caused the revolution to gain such rapid pace during Victorian’s reign and why coal was such an important raw material.

 

  • Research the life of Charles Dickens – Create a PowerPoint or Non-Chronological report with your findings. Remember to include information about where/when he was born and also key events and achievements from his life including books that he has written. You have 2 DAYS to complete this task.

 

                                                              Crime & Punishment

Find out about Crime & Punishments used in Victoria England. Find out about the types of crimes that were most common and which crimes were considered the most serious. This research could be displayed either as a leaflet, poster or PowerPoint – the creative the better! You might even want to write a radio script telling the public about your findings.

 

Art

  • Look at the work of the artist, William Morris. Make detailed sketches of his wallpapers and fabric prints. Paint or colour delicately with attention to detail.

 

  • Research traditional Victorians household objects. Making accurate drawings and sketches of these objects. Think about size, scale and shading.

 

D&T

  • Take part in cooking activities at home. Follow recipes to popular dishes of the day, such as bread, soup and jam.

 

  • Use a range of recycled materials to make a model Victorian town or slum. Plan the layout by making detailed drawings on large pieces of paper.

 

PE

  • Victorians believed that healthy bodies made healthy minds. All home set aside time for exercise each day in an attempt to keep children fit and well. You could also create a Victorian themed game!

 

  • Research Victorian Drills – Create your own ‘Victorian Drill’ – Take it in turns to lead the drill, making routines more complex as they become better at co-ordinating their formations.

 

History

  • Find out about the death of Queen Victoria and the state of Britain at the time she died. Look at film and photographic evidence of her funeral and discuss how the British public reacted to her death. Display your findings either as a fact file, poster or PowerPoint.

 

  • Discuss the Victorians ‘ Who were the Victorians’ Use a range of materials to gather initial ideas, recording them by creating an information collage.

 

Science: Properties of Materials!

  • Our Science topic is currently ‘Properties of Materials’. Can you make any reversible / irreversible changes in your kitchen involving cooking? OR look at objects in your house and record their properties. Are they strong, flexible, rough, and smooth? Photo what you decide to do and write about your findings.

 

  • Find out and research at least 5 thing that were invented during the Victorian Era – You can display this research however you choose. Create a list of items which we use now which were also used by Victorians

RE

  • Research Lent - Create a report about what happens during the Lenten period and why it is so special - try and give reasons for your answers
