Weekly Maths Tasks

Weekly Reading Tasks (Complete 1 per day)

Essential - Complete these everyday

  • Complete the Maths resources located under ‘Remote Learning’ on the school website.

  • Play on Hit the Button -  Focus on times tables, division facts and squared numbers.
  • Practice writing out your times tables on a piece of paper – rehearse them orally afterwards.
  • Working on Times Table Rockstars. If your child works on Numbots in school they can access this with the same login – this log on is located inside the front cover of your Remote Learning book.
  • Log onto Education City and complete tasks set by your teacher – you will also find this log on inside the front cover of your Remote Learning book.
  • Read a chapter from your home reading book or a book that you have borrowed from the library. If you finish your book- you can take your test on Accelerated reader online. Please email me if you have forgotten your login.
  • Following this, summarise the events from the chapter. You could bullet point what happened, create a comic strip or present the information in your own creative way.
  • Whilst you are doing this, note down any unfamiliar words from the chapter that you have read. Explore the meanings of these words by using a dictionary, reading around the sentence or using print conventions.
  • Read something around the house that isn’t a book- you can then complete your reading diary following this.
  • Write a character description for one of the characters in your book.

Weekly Spelling Tasks (Complete 1 per day)

Weekly Writing Tasks (Complete 1 per day)

  • Based on your work this week, choose 5 spellings you may have misspelt or found tricky. Create a mnemonic to help you remember the spelling.
  • Choose 5 Topic words that you are unsure of their meaning. Research what they mean and create your own definition.
  • Have a go at the spelling game on

This week look at - Spelling Rule 37 - Endings which sound like /ʃəs/ spelt –cious or –tious.

  • Proofread your writing from the day. You can use a dictionary to check the spelling of any words that you found challenging. This will allow you to check that the meaning of the word is suitable for the sentence.
  • Use a thesaurus to improve the vocabulary you have chosen in your writing today.

  • To write up a draft of the newspaper article you planned last week. Remember to include all the features of Newspapers that you have learnt about this year.
  • Edit your newspaper and publish- either using Publisher or on paper (don’t forget to use a newspaper layout: columns, image, caption etc.)
  • Design a healthy smoothie- draw an image of the smoothie, listing the ingredients and explain the choices you have made.
  • Write a set of instructions for your smoothie- remember to include imperative (bossy) verbs and time connectives.
  • Make your smoothie. If you don’t have the ingredients- you could design your own persuasive poster for your smoothie- including a catchy slogan and name.

Don’t forget to send me some examples of your work- I am happy to give feedback and would love to share some on our class Twitter @bsmyear5

Learning Project - To be completed throughout the week

Here is an overview of tasks I’d like the Year 5 children to be completing at home over the next week.

Have a look at some of the packaging of fruits and vegetables in your house. Where have these come from? How do you think the food arrives to your table? Using the sheets attached on the topic resources page- ‘journey of food’ and complete two of the journey sheets. I have an attached an example journey of bananas to help guide you.

I’d love to see some of your fantastic findings- you could either email me – or tweet us @year5bsm / @bostonstmarys

Cut in to an item of fruit or a vegetable. Create an observational drawing of this close up to show the fine details – i.e seeds in fruits. It is up to you to decide what materials you would like to use and what is available to you. You could send these to me and we could play a game of guess the fruit on our class Twitter.

Please access one of the links below and complete the workout / dance. I’d love to see some of your fantastic moves! – Oti Mabuse – Joe Wicks

Choose a pollinator and research its life cycle. What is a pollinator? Draw a diagram to illustrate the lifecycle using the correct scientific vocabulary. You can display this using Powerpoint / Word etc. or on paper. I’d love to see your diagrams!

Take photos of the steps you needed to complete to make your recipe for English on Friday. Order these steps by putting one image per Powerpoint slide with text to describe the method. Consider adding transitions to your slides to make them more interesting.

Read the scripture found on the RE page of Week 10 – Remote Learning. Discuss the questions and use your answer to help inform your task – Make a mind map showing how to behave as one of God’s people. Add text to show the links between our beliefs and actions. I’d love to share these on our class Twitter!
