LO: To include parenthesis in a persuasive letter

Your task…

Today, I would like you to write a persuasive letter to Ernest Shackleton, explaining why you believe that you're the person for the job!

Miss Parish’s example:

Dear Mr Ernest Shackleton,

It has recently come to my attention that you are looking for new crew members to join you (on board your mighty ship) for your next expedition. As soon as I saw your incredible job advertisement in the London Times newspaper, I knew straight away that I needed to apply for this (once in a life-time) position.

I honestly believe that I am worthy of a place on board your ship. Just last year, I helped build a large sailing vessel and….

WHY ARE YOU WORTHY OF A POSITION ONBOARD?

Persuade Ernest Shackleton to have you on board his ship.

What could you bring to the team?

Why do you deserve the position?

Why are YOU the person for the position?

LO: To include semi-colons and parenthesis in a diary entry

Your task…

You are Ernest Shackleton! It is 1914 and you have just set sail on your 3rd trip to the Antarctic, on board your ship called ‘Endurance’. You are planning to cross Antarctica via the South Pole.

Today, I would like you to write a diary, describing your first couple of days on board the ship.

Miss Parish’s example.

August 1914

Dear Diary,

The first few days upon the Endurance have been incredible – I couldn’t have dreamed of a more magnificent ship. The sails billow majestically in the wind and the hull glides effortlessly though the ocean. What a fantastic sight to behold! It was incredible to see so many people wave us off at the dock (in Norway) before we set sail. Being leader of this expedition has surely granted me a higher status in society: my name will go down in history as the greatest explorer of Antarctica this world has ever known. I have been on many voyages in my time, however, without doubt, this will be my most prestigious expedition to date. Simply being on this marvellous ship gives me such joy; I feel sure that everything will go our way on this tremendous voyage. I cannot wait to see what secrets Antarctica holds for us.

I’m extremely glad that I advertised in the London Times newspaper for crew members. I sure have the greatest crew anyone could have wished for. Not only are they all experienced sailors but they also: sing, dance and play music like no other crew I have experienced. What fun we will have!

Speak soon,

Ernest

LO: To include semi-colons and parenthesis in a diary entry

After months of travelling, you unfortunately hit a vast expanse of ice (and danger).

Imagine how you’d feel….

Your task…

Today, I would like you to write another diary entry describing your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Remember that you haven’t seen your family and friends for months and you are a very long way from home.
