English

This week we are going to write an explanation text all about how pollination takes place. Please complete the tasks below...

As always, if you have any successes or concerns then please feel free to email me - year5@bostonstmarys.co.uk

Monday

Identify the features of an explanation text. Please see the example attached – The Water Cycle. Make a key and underline the features you have found. Have a think about what impact these features have on the reader?

Once you have done this – identify 3 things that you liked or thought was good about the text and then 1 thing you would have done differently and why.

Tuesday

How does pollination work? Today you are going to plan an explanation text that explains how pollination happens. In order to plan this – I would split a page in to 6 boxes: Introduction, Subheading 1, Subheading 2, Subheading 3, Conclusion, Fact box / diagram. In each of these boxes – bulletpoint what you wish to include (remember to use the facts you have researched in your topic lessons and make sure the information matches the correct subheading title). I have attached a template for planning your writing, if you wish to use it.

I have also included an example explanation text about how bees make honey… but I need your help to improve it!

Wednesday

Today I would like you to begin writing your explanation text. Please take your time to carefully consider your writing and include the features you have learnt about this week. A checklist of features can be found under English resources.

You are only writing:

  • Title
  • Opening / Introduction
  • Subheading 1

Please don’t rush your writing – remember you are explaining the process of pollination in detail.

When you have done this – edit your writing using these pointers:

Read it aloud – does it make sense?

Are your spellings correct? Use a dictionary

Is your vocabulary repetitive? Use a thesaurus

Have you included a catchy title?

Have you stuck to the language features of an explanation text?

What person is your writing in?

Is your tense correct?

Thursday

Today I would like you to continue writing your explanation text. You are going to write the following-

Subtitle 2

Subtitle 3

Conclusion

Diagram / Fact box

When you have done this – edit your writing using these pointers:

Friday

Today I would like you to publish your writing. It is up to you how you do this – you could do this on publisher, word, PowerPoint and send this to me. If you prefer- you could show off your beautiful handwriting and presentation by publishing on paper and adding colour. You should have already edited your writing – however, if you come across any extra errors be sure to edit them before publishing. Also – remember to publish the corrected version. I’d love for you to send me your explanation texts, so I can share them on our class twitter.

Once you have finished – you could highlight the features you have used and check your writing against the checklist.
